A Galaxy not so far away, Danxia

Vladimir's oil abstract painting, "A Galaxy not so far away, Danxia," is a mesmerizing portrayal of the awe-inspiring Zhangye Danxia landform in China. Inspired by the vibrant colors and textures of this geological wonder, the artwork transports viewers to a world brimming with vivid hues and intricate details.

Drawing from a diverse range of colorful formations worldwide, including Peru's Rainbow Mountains, the Spectrum Range in British Columbia, and the Rainbow Range in the United States, Vladimir weaves together a tapestry of natural beauty on his canvas.

At the heart of the painting lies the captivating rock layers of Zhangye Danxia, shaped over time by erosion. The astonishing reds, browns, yellows, and greens of the sandstone layers owe their brilliance to various oxides present within them. Iron oxide gives rise to the striking red sandstone, while yellow is imbued with iron sulfide, green with chlorite, and brown with oxidized limonite.

The term "Danxia," meaning "rosy cloud," encapsulates the enchanting phenomenon that unfolds in the painting. Dating back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, this geological marvel emerged through extensive weathering in arid deserts, gradually unveiling intricate layering and revealing the hidden complexity beneath.

Vladimir's artwork effortlessly captures the essence of this geological masterpiece, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a world adorned with resplendent colors and the timeless beauty of ancient landscapes.

NOTES:

Great works of art take time. The Zhangye Danxia hills in China have been crafted and perfected by nature over the past 24 million years, by the same collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates that produced the Himalaya. Eroding over time, at about eight metres a century, the red sedimentary, siltstone, and siliciclastic rock was pushed to the surface and exposed, painting this region with a “cake layer effect”.

Historically, the Zhangye area was a thriving economic centre, vital to the Silk Road. Here, the Emperor Shuiyang of the Shui dynasty held his famous World Exposition. Even Marco Polo spoke highly of its vibrant culture.
